Praekelt Foundation's mission is to use open source technologies to deliver essential information and inclusive services to millions of people around the world, especially in Africa. Since 2007 we have worked with governments, NGOs and social enterprises to provide people living in poverty with inspiration, education, financial services and health information.
Praekelt Foundation was founded in early 2007 by Gustav Praekelt in response to the opportunities created by the rapid and unprecedented spread of mobile phones across Africa. Gustav, a digital entrepreneur and obsessive technologist, saw how many of the mobile technologies his consultancy developed could be used to give communities access to services and information which had previously been inaccessible.
Built for scale and sustainability, MomConnect is a suite of technologies that allows governments and NGOs to improve the health and wellbeing of new and expectant mothers by creating demand for – and improving the supply of – maternal health services at a national scale. In partnership with The National Department of Health, MomConnect South Africa was launched as the national maternal mHealth service in South Africa in August 2014. One year later, the platform has reached over 500,000 pregnant women and over 94% of South Africa’s clinics in the public health sector. With this successful rollout, MomConnect is now poised for launch in several new countries. Find out more
Praekelt Foundation’s Youth Engagement Platform empowers young people to improve their lives by providing them with accurate, relevant and engaging information and connecting them to services. Evolving from the success of the YoungAfricaLive mobisite, launched by Praekelt Foundation in 2009, the Youth Engagement Platform has been deployed by National Department of Health in South Africa to engage adolescents on a full range of health issues - from Sexual and Reproductive Health to Substance Abuse. Launched as B-Wise in South Africa, the platform will launch in three new countries before the end of 2015 as TuneMe. Visit B-Wise to see the platform in action. Visit B-Wise
Vumi is Praekelt Foundation’s custom-made mobile messaging platform. Since 2012, Vumi has been used to send more than 100 million messages to almost 10 million people in more than 10 African countries. In the last few years, Vumi has powered election monitoring in India and Libya, stage-based health messages in South Africa and mobile surveys in Rwanda. Open source and built to scale, Vumi allows our partners to deliver and receive vital information via SMS, USSD, voice, chat and Twitter. Visit the Vumi website for more information.
Inspired by our belief that essential information and services should be free to access, Praekelt Foundation has spent the last year working with UNICEF, Malaria No More, MAMA, Baby Center and The Girl Effect to distribute their content through the Free Basics by Facebook platform, part of the Free Basics by Facebook initiative. Now, Praekelt Foundation is proud to announce a new initiative to accelerate the impact of Free Basics – the Praekelt Foundation Incubator for Free Basics. Over the course of the next year, we’ll recruit and empower more than 100 social change organisations, providing them with the tools and support they need to take advantage of the opportunity to distribute their content and services to millions, in hundreds of languages, across the globe.
